Many thanks to all who provided initial feedback on the design concept for the adaptive re-use of the Berrima Gaol site.
Public consultation is part of a stepped process that ensures community responses are fed into the design process. To kick off the community consultation for the project, a series of community drop-in sessions was held in the Southern Highlands in February 2025 and an online feedback survey remained open from 22 February to 21 March 2025. The images and information that were on display at the drop-in sessions are available on this page.
Since that initial consultation period, the project team has compiled the public survey results and other inputs from meetings held with community groups, Wingecarribee Shire Council, heritage, environment, community and cultural organisations. The design concept was reviewed with these combined inputs to determine feasibility of design elements, and any modification required. Following this review, we met with the State Design Review Panel to discuss designs and any variations required before progressing to detailed design.
We are also reviewing design options together with approximately 31commissioned reports and surveys, from engineering, sewage and water management, riparian, flooding and bushfire modelling, traffic, green travel, parking, heritage including Connecting with Country, social impact including noise and light studies, and many more. which all contribute to the proposed design that will be submitted. As an iconic site with potential to become a revitalised destination for the Southern Highlands and Berrima Community, we appreciate your input.
