Eveleigh Railway Yards
(Eveleigh, Sydney)
The revitalisation of the Eveleigh Railway Yards (work to establish the yards commenced in 1882 and officially opened 1887), located adjacent Redfern train station and within the larger Eveleigh precinct, commenced in 1989. The railway yards at Eveleigh were an industrial city of their own lasting for 120years. The workshops closed in 1988 however the site continued to be used by the NSW government for the rail network. The precinct comprises a number of different areas, two of which that have been adaptively reused over the past decades are the Locomotive Workshops (now part of the South Eveleigh precinct) and the Carriage Workshops (part of the now Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct Renewal project).
Part of the South Eveleigh precinct was transformed into Australian Technology Park which opened in 1996. The Locomotive Workshops have been adapted over the decades and are now home to a variety of thriving venues. The Carriage Workshops, rebranded as Carriageworks are home to a multi-cultural and multi-purpose arts centre and farmers markets, with further planning for the northern precinct currently under way in 2025. Carriageworks is an award winning adaptive reuse development which continues to successfully operate today.
The project involved numerous interventions in walls to facilitate the various new uses. Photos of a couple of large interventions in main walls at the Locomotive Workshops are included at the end.
The railway yards now contain an array of venues & businesses including:
Arts Centre
Farmers Market
Event Spaces (The Eveleigh, The Red Room)
Food & Dining (The Grounds Coffee Factory, Bew Dog, The Atrium, The Patio, Anita Gelato)
Retail (Romeo’s Food Hall IGA and more)
Blacksmith School (Eveleigh Works)
Health & Wellness (Bodyfit Redfern, Crew Pilates Co., medical centre)
Underground carparking
Commerical tenants (CSIRO, Comm Bank, NEP Australia, IMC, Quantium and more)
and many more.
Planning is underway in 2025 for the next stage of the overall redevelopment and adaptive reuse of the Carriageworks precinct. A 10Ha area of the precinct known as Redfern North Eveleigh Precinct Renewal is to be transformed as part of three urban renewal projects shaping the future of Sydney.
